Black Swans

The black swan theory or theory of black swan events is a metaphor that describes an event that comes as a surprise, has a major effect, and is often inappropriately rationalized after the fact with the benefit of hindsight. The term is based on an ancient saying that presumed black swans did not exist – a saying that became reinterpreted to teach a different lesson after black swans were discovered in the wild.

Based on the author of The Black Swan Nicholas Taleb's 3 criteria:

  1. The event is a surprise (to the observer).

  2. The event has a major effect.

  3. After the first recorded instance of the event, it is rationalized by hindsight, as if it could have been expected; that is, the relevant data were available but unaccounted for in risk mitigation programs. The same is true for personal perception by individuals.

Who would have thought I'd be using the Black Swan image again. It will always be imprinted as the first image I used from my own collection taken on a visit to see the glow worms at McClaren Falls and used as my first image for a coaching website. Spot the one I did not take :)

I've always had a strong belief that whatever occurs in life, even though at the time the logic and reason escapes me - I accept full responsibility for my response and somehow - the dots will line up.

We all are guilty of living under the illusion that our version of the truth is what is real.

Defining moments in our past has left us with our current beliefs. Beliefs are a feeling of certainty about what things mean.

There is no reality - only perception.

The secret to happiness - no matter how tough the going gets - is to live congruently with your values.

Take this precious unprecedented time to question your current beliefs and let go of those beliefs and values not serving you.

Think about your own life right now. What have you decided is true for you?

I always ..........................................................................................................................................................

I never ............................................................................................................................................................

I can't...............................................................................................................................................................

I can.................................................................................................................................................................

I am..................................................................................................................................................................

Finish these sentences and see what happens.

I always..........................................................................................................................................................

I never ...........................................................................................................................................................

I am.................................................................................................................................................................

They are........................................................................................................................................................

We are...........................................................................................................................................................

I can't..............................................................................................................................................................

I must..............................................................................................................................................................

I must..............................................................................................................................................................

There is no reality - only perception.

If you have uncovered some beliefs that you feel are not in alignment with who you want to be, what could you change them to?

Do your beliefs serve, support, nurture and challenge you?
